It is an evergreen shrub or small tree of the Hypericaceae family, 2-10m tall (illustration). The opposite leaves are thin-skinned, elliptical, 5-10cm long, entire and glabrous on the edges. The flowers are borne in short axillary cymes, about 1cm in diameter. The capsules are elliptical, about 1cm long, and have persistent sepals. It is found in southern mainland China, Southeast Asia, and Malaysia, and it is said that in Malay the tar extracted from the wood was used to dye teeth black. オトギリソウ科の常緑で低木あるいは小高木,高さは2~10m(イラスト)。対生する葉は薄い皮質で楕円形,長さ5~10cm,全縁で無毛。花は腋生(えきせい)する短い集散花序につき,直径は約1cmほど。蒴果(さくか)は楕円形で長さ約1cm,萼片が宿存している。中国大陸南部から東南アジア,マレーシア地域に分布し,マレーでは材からとれるタールで歯を黒く染めたといわれる。中国では風邪や下痢の薬とされ,また葉は茶として利用される。
