The second largest tributary of the Mississippi River in the United States. The Allegheny River and Monongahela River originating in the mountains of western Pennsylvania join in Pittsburgh to become the Ohio River, which flows southwest and joins the main stream at Caro. It is 1,579 km long. Since the pioneer era, it has played an important role in transportation and the transport of goods. The river basin was the site of the French and Indian War.
