In 1954, Chuo Koronsha published a cheap edition of Ito Sei's "Twelve Chapters on Women," which had been published as a hardcover book, in a new paperback format, which became a bestseller. This triggered other companies to start publishing new paperbacks, sparking the so-called new paperback boom. Among them, Kobunsha's "Kappa Books," which Kamiyoshi Haruo started to manage in 1954, produced a large number of bestsellers, mainly how-to and entertainment books, such as Iwata Kazuo's "A Book to Strengthen Your English," Shiotsuki Yaeko's "Introduction to Weddings and Funerals," Tako Akira's "Brain Exercises," and Hoshino Yoshiro's "My Car," by stimulating demand through timely plans, simple rewritten sentences, innovative book titles, and a large investment of advertising money, marking an era in the history of postwar publishing. The low-price publishing trend seen in the popularity of paperbacks was further promoted thereafter, and, combined with the social climate favoring "light, short, and small," this spread to the paperback field, and the entry of various companies has led to a fierce "paperback war."

...Pocket Books succeeded in expanding its readership by selling at drugstores and newsstands, and started the "paperback revolution" centered on quality paperbacks in the 1950s in America. In Japan, what is called "shinsho" is a typical example, beginning with Iwanami Shinsho, which was launched in 1938, but it was only after Kappa Books (Kobunsha), launched in 1954, that paperbacks began to attract the attention of the general public. The spread of paperbacks is a phenomenon that accompanied the mass socialization situation especially after World War II, and in America today, new paperbacks account for about 40% of the total number of issues (as of 1994). ...
