The highly religious school continued to flourish in the southern city of Evora in the 17th century, producing such outstanding composers as Manuel Mendes (?-1605), Duarte Lobo (1565?-1646), Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650), and João Soares Rebelo (1610-61). Evora was a religious center, and in the 16th century, the young Japanese envoys (Tensho Embassy to Europe) visited the city to meet the archbishop. …
