...a clock used to keep standard time. Historically, it developed from a high-precision regulator clock with a second hand and a pendulum that went back and forth once every two or one seconds, which was used from around the 17th century as a standard for adjusting the daily difference in clock manufacturing and repair. With the spread of wireless communication and radio time signals, and the improvement in the precision of clocks, especially astronomical clocks, standard clocks came to play a role as a prototype, similar to the standards for length and weight, as a source of time signals and standard radio waves.
