A native of Wenxi, Hedong (Shanxi Province) during the Western Jin Dynasty in China. His courtesy name was Yimin. His father, Pei Xiu, was a great politician who was appointed Duke of Julu Commandery and given the title of Prime Minister. Pei Xiu also played an active role as the Grand Master of the Imperial Court and the Minister of the Left. He was known for his erudition from a young age, and was knowledgeable in rites and medicine, and played an active role in reviving the rites and Confucianism. At that time, the world did not like Confucianism, and the customs were becoming dissolute. He Yan, Ruan Ji and other Qing talkers emerged and preached the idea of nothingness in Laozi and Zhuangzi (the Seven Sages). In opposition to this, Pei Xiu wrote Treatise on Chongyou, in which he argued that nothingness cannot give rise to existence, and that existence is the basis of the existence and change of all things.

中国，西晋の河東(山西省)聞喜の人。字は逸民。父，裴秀は鉅鹿郡公に封ぜられ，司空を授けられた大政治家であり，彼もまた国子祭酒，尚書左僕射として活躍した。若いころから博学で名をはせ，礼学，医学にも明るく，礼制，儒学の復興に力があった。当時，世俗は儒学を好まず，風俗は放蕩に流れ，何晏，阮籍をはじめとする清談家が輩出して老荘虚無の思想を唱えた(七賢人)。裴頠はそれに反対して《崇有論》を著し，〈無〉は〈有〉を生むことはできない，〈有〉が万物の存在と変化の根本であることを説いた。
