This epiphytic orchid is native to the tropical Andes Mountains of South America, and about 200 species are known. As it is native to tropical mountains, it prefers cool summers and warm winters, and many species in Japan can only be cultivated successfully in highlands or northern regions, but their flowers are beautiful. They were introduced to Japan around the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period. Species that can be found in Japan include O. grande Lindl., O. rossii Lindl., and O. pulchellum Batem. 南アメリカのアンデス山脈熱帯域原産の着生ランで,約200種が知られている。熱帯山地原産のために,夏は冷涼,冬は温暖な条件を好み,日本では高地や北地でしかうまく栽培できないものが多いが,花は美しい。日本へは明治末ごろから大正にかけて渡来した。日本でみられるのはオドントグロッスム・グランデO.grande Lindl.,オドントグロッスム・ロッシイO.rossii Lindl.,オドントグロッスム・プルケルムO.pulchellum Batem.などがある。
