Spanish military and politician. Born into an aristocratic family that produced many military personnel. He fought on the side of Maria Cristina in the Carlist Wars and gained her trust. In 1840, he attempted an anti-Espartero coup but failed, and went into exile with Maria Cristina. In 1854, he participated in a coup against the anti-moderate government and succeeded, becoming Minister of War in the progressive Espartero government. Politically, he was in the middle between moderates and progressives, and in 1856 he ousted Espartero in a coup, and held power for a long time from 1858 to 1863. While he launched several foreign campaigns, including the African War of 1859-1860, he also took advantage of the economic boom caused by the development of the cotton industry and the railway construction boom to realize a relatively stable government. He became prime minister again in 1865, but resigned the following year in the face of an economic crisis and intensifying movements by progressives, democrats, and the people, handing power to Narvaez, who took a hard-line approach. He died on November 5, 1867 in Biarritz, France. [Jiro Nakatsuka] [References] | | | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
