Autoradiography

When a sample containing a radioisotope is exposed to a photographic emulsion for an appropriate period of time and then developed, a photograph is obtained that shows the distribution of the radioisotope in the sample. This is called an autoradiograph, and the technique is called autoradiography. It is also used as a detection method for paper chromatography and thin-layer chromatography that contain radioisotopes. Usually, the emulsion thickness of nuclear emulsion plates is less than a few hundred micrometers, and radioisotopes that undergo beta decay are often used. It is used in many fields, including chemistry, engineering, agriculture, biology, and medicine.

放射性同位元素を含む試料を，写真乳剤に適当な時間密着させてから現像すると，試料中の放射性同位元素の分布状態を示す写真が得られる。これをオートラジオグラフといい，この技術をオートラジオグラフィーという。放射性同位元素を含むペーパークロマトグラフィーや薄層クロマトグラフィーの検出法としても応用される。通常，原子核乾板の乳剤の厚さは数百 μm 以下のものを用い，放射性同位元素にはβ崩壊するものを使うことが多い。化学，工学，農学，生物学，医学など多方面に応用されている。
