...The inhabitants work in fishing, coconut plantations, and collect guano. Because of its strategic location, it was incorporated into the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1965 along with the Aldabra, Farquhar, and Desroches islands. However, in 1976, the three islands except for the Chagos Archipelago were returned to the Seychelles, which had achieved independence.

...It is a coral reef island that developed on the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge, so it has a low-lying topography, with the highest point only 25 meters above sea level. Because of its strategic importance to the Indian Ocean, especially the oil-producing areas of the Persian Gulf, it was incorporated into the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1965. In 1972, 1,400 Mauritians who had been living on the island were repatriated to Mauritius to make way for the construction of British and American military bases, and the base personnel are currently stationed on the island.
