The first king of the Sassanid Empire. Reigned 224-240. His name comes from the ancient Persian king Artaxerxes. He was the son of Papak, king of Istahri near Persepolis. After conquering Persia, he advanced into Babylonia and defeated and killed Artabanus IV of the Arsacid Empire in 224, beginning the Sassanid Empire. He later subjugated the Kushan Empire during his eastern campaign, but the main part of his empire remained in Iran and Mesopotamia, as his title "King of the Kings of Iran" indicates.
