In the Edo period, shipping businesses owned ships and transported goods. Many of them not only transported goods but also bought and sold goods. They originated from the Toi and Toimaru ships of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, but from the end of the Muromachi period, transportation and sales gradually became separate. In the Edo period, shipping wholesalers specialized in shipping, such as the Hishigaki Kaisen and the Taru Kaisen, appeared. However, some ships, such as the Hokkoku Kaisen (Kitamae-bune), did not rely on freight, but instead purchased various products from Hokuriku, Tohoku, and Ezo, sold them in the Kansai region, and also purchased daily necessities before sailing back to the northern regions the following spring, and the ship owners also acted as wholesalers.
