An old town in Kaiso District, northwest of Wakayama Prefecture. Its center is Shimotsu Port, which faces the Kii Channel and is connected to the Kisei Main Line. Its good bay has developed as an oil base since the early Showa period. Along with Wakayama Port, it has been designated as a specific important port in Wakayama Shimotsu Port. Currently, a bridge and steel frame manufacturer operates here. A prolific producer of Kishu mandarins. Choho-ji Temple, the family temple of the Kishu Tokugawa clan, is located here.
