A yellow basic dye of the diphenylmethane family. It is synthesized by heating 4,4'-bisdimethylaminodiphenylmethane with sulfur, ammonium chloride, and sodium chloride in an ammonia stream at about 200°C. It can dye various fibers, wood, leather, paper, etc. yellow. It has strong coloring power, but its drawbacks are low light resistance and that it hydrolyzes to Michler's ketone when heated to 70°C in water. It is produced in large quantities because it is inexpensive. It was once used to color pickled radish, but its use as a food coloring is now prohibited due to its toxicity. The product name is Auramine O. Auramine G is a methyl derivative of auramine, and is slightly greener than auramine.
