Located in Ikutama-cho, Tennoji-ku, Osaka City. Also called Ikutama Shrine. It enshrines two deities, Ikushima-no-kami and Tarushima-no-kami, and later enshrined Omononushi-no-kami as a secondary deity. Ikushima and Tarushima-no-kami were enshrined at Ishiyamasaki (near present-day Osaka Castle) as guardian deities of the land and the country, and Ikushima-no-mikannagi (shrine priests) worshipped them at the Imperial Court. In the Engishiki, it was a Myojin Taisha (shrine of great deities), described as "Naniwa-no-imasu-kukuni-saki-kunitama-jinja (Naniwa-no-imasu-kukuni-saki-kunitama-jinja)". In the Middle Ages, Hongan-ji Temple was built adjacent to the grounds, but both were burned down during wars, and the shrine was moved to its current location due to the construction of Osaka Castle. The Edo Shogunate donated a red seal territory of 300 koku and revered the shrine as a place of prayer for the guardian of the castle. Even after the Meiji period, the shrine was rebuilt despite being damaged by fire and war, and the current shrine building still retains the remains of the Momoyama period structure known as Ikutama-zukuri. Formerly a government-sponsored grand shrine. The annual festival is on September 9th. The summer festival is on July 11th and 12th. The Osaka Takiginou festival on August 11th and 12th is also famous. [Masahiko Ninomiya] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
