Oniyanma - Oniyanma

It is an insect belonging to the order Odonata and the family Acanthodidae in the class Insecta. It is the largest dragonfly found in Japan, with females reaching a body length of 110 mm and a hindwing length of 65 mm, with an ovipositor protruding from the tip of the abdomen. The body is jet black with yellow horizontal stripes, and the compound eyes shine dark green when mature. It is distributed from Hokkaido to the Ryukyu Islands, but is more common in the low mountain areas of Honshu. The larvae have sturdy bodies with bristles and grow in the sand of narrow streams, emerging in early summer. The adults fly back and forth over roads and waterways. The females lay eggs by sticking the ovipositor at the tip of their abdomen into the sand of streams. The eggs are oval-shaped, and it is thought that the hatched larvae take 3 to 4 years to grow. There are six or seven species of Acanthodida known from the Himalayas to Japan, but they need to be reorganized. The genus Cordulegaster , which has similar anal horns on the male's hind wings, has a few species found in Asia, Europe, and North America, while the genus Neallogaster has several species found only from the Himalayas to northwestern China. The common dwarf dragonfly is a species in a different family, the Neallogaster family, and is distantly related to the common dwarf dragonfly.

昆虫綱トンボ目オニヤンマ科に属する昆虫。日本産のトンボのうち最大種で、とくに雌は体長110ミリメートル、後翅長(こうしちょう)65ミリメートルに達し、腹端から産卵管が突き出している。体は漆黒色で黄色の横縞(よこじま)があり、複眼は成熟虫では濃緑色に光る。北海道から琉球(りゅうきゅう)列島まで分布するが、本州の低山地に多い。幼虫は剛毛を生じた頑丈な体で、細い流れの砂中に育ち、初夏のころ羽化して出る。成虫は道路や水路の上を往復して飛ぶ。雌は流れの砂中に腹端の産卵管を突き立てて産卵する。卵は楕円(だえん)形、孵化(ふか)した幼虫は成長に3～4年を要すると考えられる。オニヤンマ属は、ヒマラヤから日本まで6、7種が知られているが、再整理を要する。これらに似て雄の後翅の肛角(こうかく)が角張ったコルドレガスター属Cordulegasterは、アジア、ヨーロッパ、北アメリカに若干の種を産し、ヒマラヤオニヤンマ属Neallogasterは、ヒマラヤから中国西北部にだけ数種類が分布する。コオニヤンマは別科のサナエトンボ科に含まれる種で、オニヤンマとは遠縁である。
