Melk is a town in the western part of the Wachau Valley, in the lower Danube River basin, which flows into the Black Sea in northern Austria. It is a base for tourism in the Wachau Valley, and is a Benedictine monastery built on a hill on the bank of a branch of the Danube. It was built as a Benedictine monastery in the 11th century. It is also known that Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) stayed there in 1770 on her way to Paris to marry King Louis XVI of France. The building is a representative example of Baroque architecture in the country, characterized by its white and yellow color scheme, and is also a symbol of the Wachau Valley. ◇The monastery is 360m long from east to west, and is arranged around a church with a 65m-high spire, and is also known as the "Fortress of Faith." You can visit the gorgeous golden chapel and the library with more than 100,000 books. From the palace terrace, you can see the Danube, the Wachau Valley, and the city of Linz.
