…French female writer. From a young age, she was highly regarded as a brilliant woman at the salon of Madame de Rambouillet, and influenced the brilliant women's rights advocates known as Précieuses. In later years, she held her own salon, where people of Jansenist descent gathered to discuss thought and literature. It was at this salon that it became popular to write short sentences called "maxims" that sharply reveal the truth, and Madame de Sablé herself printed her "Aphorisms" (1678). It is particularly noteworthy that La Rochefoucauld's famous "Proverbs" was born from discussions at this salon. …
