A substance that enhances antibody production when mixed with an antigen and administered. Many commercially available adjuvants are a mixture of oil and killed tuberculosis bacteria, which have high immune-activating properties, or cell wall components of tuberculosis bacteria. The oil turns the antigen solution into a micellar state for sustained release, and has the effect of sustaining antigen stimulation. Adjuvants that contain killed tuberculosis bacteria are called complete adjuvants, while those that contain only oil are called incomplete adjuvants. Complete adjuvants are often used for the first administration, and incomplete adjuvants are used from the second administration onwards.
