The Islamic celebration of the birthday of a prophet or saint. Mawlids are not based on the Quran or hadith, but there are three types: (1) the Mawlid of the Prophet Muhammad, (2) the Shiite Mawlid, and (3) the Mawlid of a Sunni mystical saint. Wahhabism despises or outlaws these Mawlids as promoting human deification, but they are celebrated with great fervor in other parts of the Islamic world. In Egypt, it is traditional to make sugar cakes in the shape of brides, camels, horses, and other animals on the occasion of (1), and eat them after the festival.
