A gastropod of the Bucconidae family. Its scientific name, perryi , comes from the fact that it was first collected in Tokyo Bay by Commodore Perry, famous for his Black Ships, at the end of the Edo period, and hence it is also called Perribora. The shell is thin and globose, about 5 cm high and 3.4 cm in diameter. It has about five layers, each small and low, but the last layer is large and round. The shell is milky white and covered with a grayish-yellow velvety skin. The shell mouth is very large. The body has a large, flat foot, which resembles a tongue and is called "berotsubu" around the coast of Mutsu Bay. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
