A forest that develops in places where clouds and mist are constantly covering it. It is mainly composed of evergreen trees, and because of the high humidity and coolness, mosses grow densely and hang down even to the higher parts of the trees. It is also called a moss forest. Large forests develop on the middle or higher mountain slopes of tropical rainy areas such as New Guinea and Borneo. Those that grow on high mountains in dry savannah regions such as the Andes in South America, and the Rwenzori, Kilimanjaro, and Mount Kenya in Africa are striking in terms of scenery. In Japan, there is a mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest of mainly cedar trees at an altitude of 700 to 1,500 meters on Yakushima Island in Kyushu.
