This is an old town in Aso County, in the eastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, bordering Miyazaki Prefecture. It is a plateau region that stretches from the southeastern part of Mount Aso to the Kyushu Mountains, and is covered with vast forests and wilderness. Beef cattle are raised, and shiitake mushrooms, tea, chestnuts, and tobacco are also cultivated. The town's center is Mamihara, where national highways 218 and 265 intersect. Soyo Gorge, famous for its autumn leaves, is located upstream of the Gokase River. In February 2005, it merged with Yabe Town and Seiwa Village in Kamimashiki County to become a town, called Yamato Town. It has an area of 118.92 km2 and a population of 4,818 (2003).
