Love wife somewake tatsuna

Joruri Gidayu-bushi. Historical piece. 13 acts. Collaborative work by Yoshida Kanshi and Miyoshi Shoraku. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in February 1751 (Kan'en 4). This is an expanded and revised version of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "Tanba Yosaku Matsuyo no Komuro-bushi," which depicts the love between the famous horseman Tanba Yosaku and the innkeeper Seki no Koman, a famous folk song. The main story is about Date Yosaku, a retainer of the Yurugi family, who is banished for the theft of the money used to buy the freedom of Iroha, a geisha and lover of a young lord, and for his affair with his maid Shigenoi, and becomes a wandering horseman. The play also includes a story about Shigenoi's father, the Noh actor Takemura Sadanoshin, who teaches his lord the Noh play "Dojoji" and then commits seppuku inside a bell to atone for his daughter's sins; the tragedy of Yosaku's brother-in-law, the zato Keimasa; and the horseman Yosaku falling in love with Iroha, who has become Koman of Seki. However, the most famous part is the tenth act, "Shigenoi Kowakeru," which is often performed in both Bunraku puppet theater and Kabuki.

Saved by her father's death, Shigenoi becomes the wet nurse of Shirabehime, the daughter of her master. On the day that the princess leaves to travel east as an adopted daughter of the Iruma family, she learns that the young horseman Sankichi, who appeased the princess by playing sugoroku on the journey, is her son with Yosaku. However, out of obligation to her master, she holds back her tears and leaves without revealing the names of father and son. In Kabuki, Shigenoi is a representative role for a female actor, and is known for her performance of inner sorrow. Sankichi also plays one of the leading roles as a child actor.
