An American educator who was the father of the Kumamoto Protestant group, the Kumamoto Band. He was a Civil War veteran and an artillery captain, but in 1871 (Meiji 4), at the recommendation of Verbeck, he came to Japan as a teacher at the Kumamoto Foreign School, where he provided a strict education in the style of the United States Military Academy (West Point). At the same time, he held Bible lectures at his home, and one year later, he had fostered a group of students with strong faith. Among his students were Ebina Danjo, a representative Christian leader in the Meiji and Taisho periods, and Tokutomi Soho, a representative modern journalist and critic. His Christianity is said to have been strongly ethical and practical. He later transferred to the Osaka English School, returned to Japan for a time, and returned to Japan in 1893 (Meiji 26) to serve as an English teacher at the Third High School.
