"Op" comes from optic or optical, which means "optical" or "visual." Since the exhibition "The Responsive Eye" (organized by WG Seitz) at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965, the term has come to be used in comparison with "Pop Art." Broadly speaking, it is an extension of constructivism and geometric abstract painting, but it refers to a trend that emerged in the 1960s with Albers and Vasarely as its pioneers.
