Many immigrants and merchants from Italy, Greece, and the Orient flowed into the coastal cities, centered on Salona (now Solin), and settled in the fertile region, so ports and road networks were developed. Inland, agricultural people lived in villages, and some tribes continued to live a nomadic lifestyle, but in the valleys, large farms with their own wills could be found. …

…there is an amphitheater from the time of Augustus in Pula, Istria. The palace built by Emperor Diocletian (295-305) near his hometown Salona in Dalmatia, which later developed into the city of Split, is well preserved, and was introduced by the architect R. Adam in 1764 as a model for English neoclassical architecture.

Although the foundations of basilicas remain at the sites of the early Christian centres of Dalmatia, Salona, and in the inland towns of Gamzigrad and Caričin Grad, the most important surviving church is that of Poreč in Istria, whose 6th-century mosaics and interior decoration are of a quality similar to that of the contemporary works in Ravenna.
