[German and French dictionaries]
The German Dictionary by the Brothers Grimm, mentioned earlier, had a major influence on modern scientific dictionary editing. Works before Grimm include the five-volume Grammar-Critical Dictionary of High German (1774-86) edited by Johann Christoph Adelung (1732-1806), which is comparable to Dr. Johnson's English Dictionary. The Brothers Grimm, who also edited Grimm's Fairy Tales, began editing the dictionary with the aim of purifying the German language, and the first volume was published in 1852, but subsequent publications progressed slowly, and it was not until 1960, more than 100 years later, that the entire 16 volumes and 32 books were completed.
