A county in the northern part of South Pyongan Province, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Located in the middle reaches of the Cheongcheon River, the eastern half is mountainous land belonging to the Myohyang Mountain Range, and the western half is flat land that occupies a section of the Anju Plain. The mountainous region is rich in underground resources such as iron, anthracite, and graphite, and various mining industries are thriving. The Quandong Mine, which produces iron ore with a purity of 55%, is particularly famous. The central town of Kaecheon-eup is a key station on the Manpo Line, which connects Pyongyang with the Kangye and Manpo areas, and the railway line to Anju and Kusong branches off here. In addition to various underground resources, the county is a transportation and commercial center for transporting agricultural products, mainly rice, harvested in the plains to industrial areas along the Yellow Sea coast.
