Polish author and playwright. Known for his many talents, he was active not only in writing about art theory and philosophy, but also as a painter and photographer. He was a leader of the avant-garde art movement between the two world wars. He left behind many plays and novels that criticized modern civilization. He committed suicide when the German and Soviet armies invaded Poland during World War II. His representative works include the novel Unsatisfied (1930) and the play The Shoemakers (1934).

ポーランドの作家，劇作家。多彩な才能で知られ，芸術理論や哲学の著作に加え，画家，写真家としても活躍。両大戦間期のアバンギャルド芸術運動の旗手となる。現代文明批判を基調とする多くの戯曲，小説を残した。第２次大戦でドイツ軍とソ連軍がポーランドに侵攻した際に自殺。代表作に長編小説《非充足》（1930年），戯曲《靴職人たち》（1934年）など。
