An alluvial plain in the middle and lower reaches of the Yoshino River in northern Tokushima Prefecture. The river mouth stretches 14 kilometers from north to south and 80 kilometers from east to west, from the mouth to Ikeda-cho, Miyoshi City, at its western limit, making it an isosceles triangular plain. The north bank of the Yoshino River is at the southern foot of the Sanuki Mountains, which are made of Izumi sandstone, which is easily weathered, and has developed into an alluvial fan. On the other hand, the south bank of the Yoshino River is at the foot of the Tsurugi Mountains, part of the Shikoku Mountains, and is made of crystalline schist, which is less susceptible to weathering and erosion, so no alluvial fans have formed. The Tokushima Plain is an area known as Awa Kitagata, and is dominated by field crops. In the Edo period, indigo farming was the main crop, but there has been a shift to growing radishes, vegetables, and flowers. The delta lowlands at the mouth of the Yoshino River in the eastern part of the plain were offshore at the time of the Jomon Sea Level Rise, and the current land surface elevation is equivalent to less than five metres above sea level. Land use in this area has changed from double rice cropping to rice farming and lotus root cultivation, and rice farming and eel farming. The area around Kitajima Town, blessed with underground water from the Yoshino River, has developed into a chemical industrial zone that uses groundwater from deep wells.
