A river in western Africa. It is 4,184 km long. It originates in the mountains of the Republic of Guinea, flows northeast into Mali, then turns southeast and flows through Niger and Nigeria, forming a large delta at its mouth and emptying into the Gulf of Guinea. An inland delta is formed between Segou and Timbuktu in Mali. Its largest tributary is the Benue River. Its drainage area is 1.89 million km2 . The surrounding area corresponds to western Sudan, and since ancient times the Kingdom of Ghana, the Mali Empire, and the Songhai Empire flourished in the middle and upper reaches, while the Benin Kingdom flourished in the lower delta. There are many old cities, such as Djenné, Gao, and Timbuktu. It is also important as an inland waterway. In 1805, Parke explored the upper reaches. → Related topics Africa | Nigeria | Mali (country) Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
