...This was introduced to Persia in the 6th century, and then to Western Europe in the 9th or 10th century via Arabia and the Byzantine Empire. The word chess (German: Schach, French: échecs) comes from the Persian word shah (king), and checkmate also comes from Persian. Chess was popular throughout the Middle Ages, and modern chess was established at the end of the 15th century.
