Rieger, František Ladislav
[Born] December 10, 1818. Semis
[Died] March 3, 1903. Czech politician in Prague. Born into a miller's family, he participated in the independence movement at a young age. In 1848 he led the Prague Revolution and presented national demands to the Austrian government. He became the Czech representative in the Constituent Assembly, but after the Assembly was dissolved (1849) he went into exile in France. After returning to Prague (61), he engaged in cultural activities in Prague, devoting himself to compiling the first Czech encyclopedia and founding a newspaper. He also became a leader of the conservative wing of the Nationalist Party (later the Old Czechs) together with his father-in-law, F. Palacký (60), and held a seat in the Imperial Diet (61). He advocated conservative nationalism, such as participating in the Bohemian Manifesto (68), which demanded Czech rights and Bohemian autonomy. He eventually lost his seat due to the rise of the radical Young Czechs (91), and retired from politics, receiving the title of baron (97).
