The style and structure of Xinjiang Uighur homes vary from region to region. Kashgar homes have a complex floor plan with courtyards scattered throughout, which play a major role in daily life, and are centered around a large hall called an "aiwan." They have flat earth roofs with wooden beams and small beams, and skylights let in light. There are niches inside the rooms, and gypsum carvings and carvings are used extensively on the wooden components.
