Tripoli (English spelling)
Libya's capital and major port city. In Arabic, it is called Ṭarābulus al-Gharb (Tripoli of the West, to distinguish it from Tripoli in Lebanon). It is located in northwestern Libya, in the northern part of Tripolitania, facing the Mediterranean Sea, and handles more than three-quarters of Libya's imports and exports. It was founded in the 7th century BC as a Phoenician colony called Oea, and was called the "Three Cities" along with the nearby Leptis Magna and Sabratha. It was a base for the Mediterranean trade on the trans-Saharan side, and changed hands many times. It exports groundnuts, olive oil, tuna, citrus fruits, etc. It imports food, clothing, and machinery. It has industries in petrochemicals, leather, tobacco, and carpets. It is a beautiful city located on a fertile oasis. The old town around the port contains the Arch of Marcus Aurelius (163) and the Karamanli Mosque (1740), while the new town to the southeast is lined with modern buildings such as government offices and theaters, as well as the royal palace from the Libyan Kingdom era and a university. The international airport is 34 km southwest. Population 1,065,405 (2006).

In Arabic, it is called Ṭarābulus ash-Shām (meaning Tripoli of the East). It is located in northern Lebanon, 65 km north-northeast of the capital Beirut, and is the administrative center of the North Lebanon Governorate. It is divided into two parts: the inland urban area on both sides of the Abu Ali River, and the port area, which are connected by wide streets. It was built around 700 BC, and became the capital of the Phoenician Federation of Three City-States around 300 BC. It was later ruled by the Seleucid Empire, and then by Islam from around 638, and prospered during the 12th century when it was occupied by the Crusaders. It was later ruled by the Egyptian dynasty, but was occupied by the British during World War I, and became part of the Republic of Lebanon in 1943. It is a port for shipping oil from the Kirkuk oil fields in Iraq, and its main industries are oil refining, soap manufacturing, cotton weaving, sponge harvesting, tobacco, and fruit processing. The city contains the Great Mosque, built in 1294, and the Tinar Mosque, built in 1336. The population is 160,000 (estimated 1988).
