Year of birth: Meiwa 5.1.5 (1768.2.22)
A Japanese scholar of the late Edo period. A samurai of Hamada Domain, Iwami (Shimane Prefecture). Born in Yahagi, Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). His original surname was Ogino. His first name was Tomoaki. He was commonly known as Hikorokuro, his title was Karei, and his pen names were Miyagawasha and Ashikarian. In 1796 (Kansei 8, some say 1797), he inherited the Saito family and lived in Edo, serving Matsudaira Yasuto of Hamada Domain, Iwami. He studied under Ise Sadatake and Kamo Suetaka, and called himself a disciple of Norinaga, but in fact he was a disciple of Motoori Ohira. He is said to have had connections with comic writers such as Santo Kyoden. He had over 500 disciples. He wrote many books on subjects ranging from Shinto, commentaries on the classics, Japanese linguistics, to essays, giving the strong impression of being a generalist. His family anthology is the Ashikarianshu. His works include Shinto Mondo and Drunken Five Theory. <References> Noriko Ohashi, "Ashikakuan Saito Hikomaro" (Gakuen, Vol. 7, No. 11)
