Danish dancer and choreographer. Born in Copenhagen to a French dancer father and a Swedish mother. After studying at the Royal Danish Ballet School, he studied under Parisian dancer Auguste Vestris (1760-1842). After a successful career at the Paris Opera, he returned to Denmark and became the principal dancer and director of the Royal Danish Ballet in 1830, a position he held until 1877. Based on the refined French style of ballet, he perfected a unique style that emphasized theatricality, ushering in the golden age of Danish ballet. His techniques also influenced Russian ballet through his students. His works are also valuable as they convey the techniques of the Romantic ballet era that had been lost in other countries. His representative works include La Sylphide (1836), Naples (1842), and A Fairy Tale (1854). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
