A general term for birds of the passerine order Rhinocryptidae family. This name comes from the tendency of many birds in this family to stand up their tail feathers. It consists of about 12 genera and 26 species, with three species (two of which are endemic) found in Central America, and all but the two mentioned above found in South America. They live in forests from plains to mountains, lush grasslands dotted with shrubs, and reed beds, mainly on the ground or in the shrub layer at about ground level. Total length is about 10 to 25 cm. All species have feathers in white, gray, black, brown, red, etc., making them a generally blurred bird. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
