croquants

…the general term for peasant revolts that occurred in rural areas of western and southern France from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. Croquants means "farmers who till the soil with a hoe" and is a derogatory term for peasants. Many of the revolts were caused by rising prices, epidemics, and fears for survival due to war.
