?‐1139 A philosopher in the Western Islamic world. He also served as a vizier (victim) of the Almoravid dynasty. His Latin name was Avem(n)pace. He was born in Zaragoza, Spain. It is said that while he was a vizier of the Almoravid dynasty, he was assassinated at a young age by his enemies in Fez, Morocco. His philosophical treatises, such as "The Guidance of the Solitary" and "The Goal of Man," remain incomplete. In the history of Islamic philosophy, he is noted for being the person who, prior to Ibn Rushd, advocated the "monopoly of the intellect."
