British medieval historian. After graduating from Oxford University, he became a fellow of Trinity College, but in 1850 he was ordained and excavated medieval historical documents from various places while working as a parish priest. In 1866, he became a professor of modern history at Oxford University, and by advocating a history based on strict criticism of historical documents, he opened the door to the establishment of modern history in Britain. In addition to his main work, A History of the Constitution of England (3 volumes, 1873-1878), he participated in the publication of the Rawls Series, a national historiographical project, and personally edited the historical documents. In his later years, he returned to the priesthood and became Bishop of Chester in 1884 and Bishop of Oxford in 1888.

英国の中世史学者。オックスフォード大学卒業後いったんは同大学トリニティ・カレッジのフェローとなったが，1850年聖職につき，教区牧師を務めるかたわら各地に残る中世史料を発掘した。1866年オックスフォード大学の近代史欽定講座教授となり，厳正な史料批判に基づく歴史学を主張して，英国における近代的な歴史学確立の門を開いた。主著《イギリス国制史》（全３巻，1873年−1878年）のほか，国家的な史料編纂プロジェクトである《ロールズ・シリーズ》の刊行に参加して，みずからも史料の校訂にあたった。晩年は聖職に復帰し，1884年にチェスター，1888年にオックスフォードの主教となった。
