British medieval historian. After graduating from Oxford University, he became a fellow of Trinity College, but in 1850 he was ordained and excavated medieval historical documents from various places while working as a parish priest. In 1866, he became a professor of modern history at Oxford University, and by advocating a history based on strict criticism of historical documents, he opened the door to the establishment of modern history in Britain. In addition to his main work, A History of the Constitution of England (3 volumes, 1873-1878), he participated in the publication of the Rawls Series, a national historiographical project, and personally edited the historical documents. In his later years, he returned to the priesthood and became Bishop of Chester in 1884 and Bishop of Oxford in 1888. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
