Milyutin, Dmitrii Alekseevich
Born: July 10, 1816, Moscow
[Died] February 7, 1912. Born in Simeis, near Yalta. Russian soldier and politician. Count. After serving as professor at the Military Academy and chief of staff of the Caucasian Army, he was Minister of War from 1861 to 1881. In the 1960s and 1970s, he implemented a series of military reforms and promoted the modernization of the Russian Army. Politically, he took a moderate liberal stance, advocated bourgeois reforms, and made concessions to the peasant movement. On the other hand, he advocated thorough suppression of the Polish uprising of 1963-64. After the Berlin Conference in 1878, he was the de facto leader of Russian diplomacy. In the early reign of Alexander III, he was in conflict with the reactionary group led by KP Pobedonostsev along with MT Loris-Melkov. He retired in 1881.

[Died] February 7, 1872. Moscow Russian politician. Younger brother of D.A. Milyutin. After graduating from Moscow University, he worked for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and served as a member of the "Codification Committee" for the emancipation of serfs from 1859 to 1861. From 1864, he also made a major contribution to the emancipation of Polish serfs, until he retired in 1867 due to illness.

ロシアの軍人,政治家。伯爵。軍アカデミー教授,コーカサス (カフカス) 軍総参謀長などをつとめたあと,1861~81年陸相に就任。 60~70年代一連の軍制改革を行いロシア軍の近代化を促進。政治的には穏健な自由主義の立場をとり,ブルジョア諸改革を唱え,農民運動に譲歩。他方 63~64年のポーランド蜂起には徹底的な弾圧を主張した。 78年のベルリン会議後は事実上ロシア外交を指導。アレクサンドル3世治世初期には,M.T.ロリース=メーリコフらとともに,K.P.ポベドノスツェフらの反動グループに対立。 81年引退した。
