Ise Castle

Japanese: 磯城 - しき
Ise Castle

This area occupies the central part of the Nara Basin in the north-central part of Nara Prefecture. The name Shiki District appears in the "Nihon Shoki," but it later became three districts: Toichi, Shikijo, and Shikige. In 1897 (Meiji 30), the three districts merged to become Shiki District again. It includes the current Shiki District, Sakurai City, and part of Tenri City. It is the site of the remains of Shikishima Kanasashi Palace (Emperor Kinmei) and other palaces mentioned in the "Nihon Shoki," and the remains of the ancient grid system and medieval moated settlements are well preserved. It is a rice paddy area with many reservoirs, and in the Meiji period, cultivation of cotton, rapeseed, and rush grass as well as rice and wheat was thriving.
