Horses are particularly susceptible to this disease, and when abdominal pain is acute, the affected horse will become restless, scratching its front, kicking its abdomen, crouching, or suddenly collapsing. It will also exhibit other symptoms, such as sweating, increased heart rate, abnormal urination-like movements, and staring at its ribs. If a horse eats too much grain at once, it can suddenly expand its stomach, causing severe abdominal pain and even whole-body shock (bulimia), which can sometimes lead to stomach rupture and be fatal. Sweating, drinking cold water, or the stress of participating in a trade fair can also cause intermittent intestinal spasmodic contractions (spastic colic).
