Bouveault-Blanc reaction

This is a type of reduction reaction, and one of the named reactions for the synthesis of alcohols (1903). When a carboxylic acid ester is reacted with metallic sodium and an alcohol, the ester is reduced to an alcohol (equation (1)). The yield is good if t -butyl alcohol is used as the alcohol R ³ OH. Fatty acid amides are also reduced under similar conditions to give amines. This reaction corresponds to the reduction of esters and amides with lithium tetrahydroaluminate LiAlH _4. [Tomoda Shuji]

還元反応の一種で，アルコール合成のための人名反応の一つ(1903)。カルボン酸エステルに金属ナトリウムとアルコールを作用させると，エステルは還元されてアルコールとなる(式(1))。アルコールR³OHとしてt‐ブチルアルコールを用いると収率がよい。脂肪酸アミドも同様の条件下で還元され，アミンを与える。この反応はテトラヒドロアルミン酸リチウムLiAlH₄によるエステルやアミドの還元に相当する。【友田修司】
