Schaffhausen - Schaffhausen (English spelling)

The capital of the canton of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland. Population 33,436 (2001). Located on the right bank of the Rhine. With the Rhine Falls just downstream, it developed as a transshipment point for cargo, and the old town, which retains vestiges of the Middle Ages, is full of murals and decorative bay windows, and there are many things to see, including the old town hall. The new outer town has many factories for machinery, steel, textiles, watches, etc.

The canton of Schaffhausen is the northernmost canton of Switzerland, jutting into Germany north of the Rhine, with an area of 299 square kilometers and a population of 73,400 (2001). The Landen region, part of the Swabian Alp, makes up most of the canton, and one third of the canton is covered by forests.

It joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501. 94% of the canton is classified as agriculturally productive, and like the Jura and the central lowlands, livestock farming is becoming increasingly important, but because it is in the shadow of the Black Forest, wheat and grape cultivation are still thriving. Industry in urban areas exceeds agriculture, and the industrial population is more than five times the agricultural population, with many workers commuting from rural areas.
