A device to facilitate transportation between two waterways with a large difference in elevation. Usually, rails are laid and carts carrying ships and other objects are raised and lowered with wire ropes. One well-known example is the one installed on the Lake Biwa Canal between Nanzenji and Keage in Kyoto City, but it is no longer in use. They were once installed and used in various places between canals, but due to the development of lifts and other means of transportation, they are not built very often these days.

標高差の大きい二つの水路の間の輸送を容易にするための装置。普通，レールを敷いてワイヤロープで船などを載せた台車を昇降させる。琵琶湖疎水に設けられた京都市の南禅寺〜蹴上(けあげ)間のものはそのよく知られた一例だが現在は使われていない。運河間などで，かつて各地で設置・利用されたが，リフトの発達や他の輸送機関の発達もあって最近はあまり作られない。
