A device to facilitate transportation between two waterways with a large difference in elevation. Usually, rails are laid and carts carrying ships and other objects are raised and lowered with wire ropes. One well-known example is the one installed on the Lake Biwa Canal between Nanzenji and Keage in Kyoto City, but it is no longer in use.
