[Died] August 9, 1978. Stuart, Florida. American novelist. He published his debut novel, Confusion (1924), when he was a sophomore at Harvard University. He subsequently published SS San Pedro (31, Scribner Prize), The Last Adam (33), Men and Brethren (36), The Just and the Unjust (42), Guard of Honor (48, Pulitzer Prize), By Love Possessed (57), and Morning, Noon and Night (68). Although By Love sold phenomenally, he has not been praised as anything other than a rational and conservative writer of genre novels.

[Died] April 23, 1786, London. British landscape painter, draughtsman and writer born in Russia. He travelled to England in 1742 and stayed in Rome for a time, but settled in England from 1746 onwards, where he taught art and was also active in painting and writing. His son, J. Cousins, was a leading figure in watercolor painting. The majority of his works are watercolors and drawings. His works include "A New Method of Assisting the Invention in Drawing Original Compositions of Landscape" (c. 1782), which discusses "blot drawing", a method of completing a work based on an accidental blemish.

[Died] November 30, 1990, Los Angeles. American journalist and peace activist. Graduated from Columbia University. After working as a newspaper reporter, he became editor of Saturday Review in 1940 (president and editor in 1942). Came to Japan in 1953 as a professor exchange student. Chairman of the World Federalist Association from 1954 to 1956 (honorary chairman in 1956). Since 1965, he has been chairman of the World Association of World Federalists. In 1971, he left Saturday Review to found World Magazine. He also served on the board of directors of National Educational Television and the Samuel Gress Foundation. He is the author of Talks with Nehru (51) and many others.

Cozens, John Robert

Born: 1752, London
[Died] December 1797, London British watercolor landscape painter and designer. Son of A. Cousins. He made many landscape drawings during his travels in Italy from 1776-79 and 1782-83, which he later turned into watercolors. His poetic style had a great influence on many British landscape painters. J. Turner and T. Girtin copied his watercolors and learned his techniques. He went insane in 1793. 37 of his works are in the British Museum and 28 in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Cousins, Samuel

Born: May 9, 1801, Exeter
[Died] May 7, 1887, London. British copperplate engraver. He copied oil paintings by the great masters of his time. He made his name in 1826 with his copperplate engraving of portrait painter T. Lawrence's "Mrs. Acland and Children." He also copied many works by J. Reynolds, J. E. Millais, and others.

ロシア生れのイギリスの風景画家,図案家,文筆家。 1742年イギリスに渡り,一時ローマに滞在したが 46年以後イギリスに定住し,絵の教師をするかたわら制作および文筆活動にたずさわる。水彩画の第一人者である J.カズンズは彼の息子。作品の大部分は水彩画と素描。著作には,偶然にできた汚点をもとに作品を完成させる「ブロット・ドローイング」を論じた"A New Method of Assisting the Invention in Drawing Original Compositions of Landscape" (1782頃) ほかがある。

イギリスの水彩風景画家,図案家。 A.カズンズの息子。 1776~79年および 82~83年のイタリア旅行中に描いた多くの風景素描をのちに水彩画に仕上げ,その詩情に富む画風によってイギリスの多くの風景画家に大きな影響を与えた。 J.ターナー,T.ガーティンは彼の水彩画を模写してその手法を学んだ。 93年発狂。作品は大英博物館に 37点,ビクトリア・アンド・アルバート美術館に 28点所蔵されている。
