…In 1850, IM Singer succeeded in producing the first practical sewing machine in Boston, and in the following year, 1851, he teamed up with Edward Clerk, a lawyer in New York, to establish IM Singer & Co. In 1863, the company changed its name to Singer Manufacturing Company, and opened new factories in Glasgow in 1867 and Montreal in 1873. The company also introduced trade-in and installment sales systems early on, and as a result, by the beginning of the 20th century, it held an overwhelming position in the global sewing machine market, including a 90% share of the market for sewing machines in Japan. …
